Morningstar Appoints Paul Kaplan, Ph.D., CFA, as Director of Research, Vahid Fathi Named Director of Stock Research

CHICAGO, Feb 06, 2001 – Morningstar, Inc., a leading provider of investment information and analytical tools, announced today that Paul Kaplan, Ph.D., CFA, has been appointed director of research, reporting to Don Phillips, managing director. Kaplan replaces John Rekenthaler, who was recently named president of online advice for Morningstar.

In his new role, Kaplan will lead a group of research analysts who develop and maintain Morningstar's quantitative methodologies. These methodologies include the Morningstar RatingTM and style categorizations for analyzing mutual funds and common stocks, and the models behind online advice and investment tools for advisors. Vahid Fathi, doctor of engineering science, joined Morningstar last year as director of stock research. Fathi leads the development of new stock methodologies and Morningstar proprietary measures, reporting to Kaplan.

"Morningstar's research team, which includes four analysts with doctorates, has built a reputation for providing industry-leading analysis that affects the way both individual and professional investors evaluate portfolios and overall market trends," said Don Phillips, managing director of Morningstar. "Paul is one of the foremost experts on asset allocation and quantitative analysis and will play an integral role in enhancing Morningstar's growing toolkit for investors."

Kaplan joined Morningstar in 1999 as director of quantitative research where he developed the methodology behind MorningstarSM ClearFutureSM, the firm's online retirement-planning service, and conducted research on asset allocation, portfolio construction, and stock and mutual-fund analysis. Prior to joining Morningstar, Kaplan was vice president and chief economist at Ibbotson Associates where he developed asset-allocation software and created forecasting and dynamic simulation models of asset-class behavior. Kaplan also served on the faculty of Northwestern University during the 1980s where he taught international finance and statistics. He holds a bachelor's degree in mathematics and computer science from New York University and a master's degree and Ph.D. in Economics from Northwestern University.

Before joining Morningstar, Fathi established and directed the North American metals- and mining-research coverage at ABN AMRO. He also published detailed financial modeling, forecasts, and stock-evaluation reports. Prior to ABN AMRO, Fathi served as senior vice president for Everen Securities in Chicago where he worked on research coverage and developed the firm's private placement and initial public offering businesses. He was named All-Star Analyst by The Wall Street Journal five times in the last seven years. Fathi holds bachelor's and master's degrees from South Dakota School of Mines and Technology and a doctorate of engineering from Columbia University.
