Morningstar Launches New Retirement Area on Morningstar.com

CHICAGO, Apr 03, 2001 – Morningstar, a leading provider of investment information and analytical tools, today introduced a new area on its Web site, www.morningstar.com, that reaches out to retirees as well as investors who are 10 years or more away from retirement.

"More than 28 millions Americans are retired and another 75 million are 50 years of age or older. Most Web sites target people who are saving now so they can retire in comfort. Yet few sites reach out to those investors whose retirements are just a few years away, or to those who are already there," says Susan Dziubinski, director of the Retirement area for Morningstar.com. "Investing while in retirement requires a different strategy than investing for retirement, and our Retirement area provides solutions so that a retiree's golden years can, in fact, be golden."

Morningstar.com's new Retirement section replaces its 401(k) Advice tab and now includes:

Strategies for Retirees
"Improve Your Retirement" is a weekly column by Sue Stevens, director of financial planning for Morningstar Associates, LLC. Stevens' columns help retirees determine how to effectively tap their retirement accounts, how to pay less in taxes, and how to leave more to their heirs. This section also includes a directory of in-retirement topics, including Estate Planning, Portfolio Protection, Cash Flow, and Asset Mix. The Conversation Forum, "Investing During Retirement," provides an online chat community where retirees share their investment problems, solutions, and strategies.

Tactics for Savers
"Tactics for Savers" features Dziubinski's weekly column "SmartInvestor," which speaks to investors who have at least 10 years before they retire. The topics in this section include 401(k)s, 403(b)s, and IRAs. The "Investing for Retirement" Conversation Forum offers an online chat community where investors saving for retirement can pose questions and get answers.

Morningstar® ClearFutureSM Retirement Planning Tool
The retail version of Morningstar® ClearFutureSM, the company's online 401(k) planning service, is accessible under the Web site's Retirement tab. It provides specific investment advice for 401(k) plans in the context of investors' overall retirement savings. The service is available as part of the Morningstar.com Premium Membership, which costs $99 per year. ClearFuture, offered by Morningstar Associates, LLC, can also be purchased separately for $7.95 per quarter.

Other tools in the Retirement area include Goal Planner, which helps investors identify the likelihood of meeting their financial goals, and Morningstar's Income Worksheet for Retirees, which helps investors determine how much they can spend each year in retirement.

Editorial Background
Stevens writes a "Portfolio and Planning" column for the monthly newsletter Morningstar FundInvestor, and manages a private financial-planning practice, specializing in retirement and portfolio planning. She joined Morningstar in 1999 as the financial-planning specialist, and was named director of financial planning for Morningstar Associates, LLC, in 2000.

Before joining Morningstar, Stevens headed the research and development team for Institutional Participant Education at The Vanguard Group. Stevens holds a master's degree in business administration from the University of Chicago, and a master's degree from the College of Financial Planning. She is a Certified Public Accountant (CPA), Certified Financial Planner (CFP), and a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA).

Dziubinski is director of both the Retirement and University tabs on Morningstar.com. She began her career at Morningstar in 1991 as a mutual-fund analyst and became editor of Morningstar FundInvestor in 1997. She speaks regularly on investment-related topics and is quoted often in the Wall Street Journal and the New York Times. She has also made numerous television and radio appearances.
