The Group: The Morningstar Investment Management group consists of our investment advice, consulting, retirement-solutions, and index businesses. Through our registered investment advisor subsidiaries, we use our expertise in asset allocation, manager research, and portfolio construction to create innovative investment solutions for institutions, advisors, and their clients.

The Role:  As a Senior Investment Consultant on the Retirement Solutions team you will be expected to manage plan sponsor and plan provider client engagements.  This includes identifying preliminary client investment needs, leading clients through the implementation of investment solutions, working through the engagements until the deliverables are complete, and acting as a key investment resource to clients on an ongoing basis.  This position will focus on defined- contribution plan evaluation and design, and manager selection within US retirement space.  In this role, you will conduct manager due diligence on a variety of investment vehicles and asset classes, including alternatives and guaranteed income products.  The Senior Investment Consultant will work closely with all other members of the global investment management team including client relationship managers, technologists, and senior leaders.  This position is based in our Chicago office.

 Responsibilities

+ Conduct in-depth qualitative and quantitative due diligence on mutual funds and other investment vehicles, including the ability to consider investment specific criteria such as style consistency, risk/return statistics, correlation to benchmarks, and others.
+ Conduct in-depth defined-contribution plan evaluation and design.
+ Asset allocation and fund selection for defined benefit plans.
+ Prepare ongoing client reports including market commentaries, internally developed capital market assumptions, detailed fund attribution, and investment methodologies.
+ Participate in research efforts on the retirement industry with a focus on menu design and services, including target maturity products.
+ Adopt a forward-thinking approach for advising clients on alternative methods of solving problems within the industry.
+ Assess the theoretical and practical implications of our methodology as you strive to innovate and improve our products and services.
+ Effectively manage both internal (sales force) and external client needs.

 

Requirements

+ A bachelor’s degree is required; an MBA and/or CFA are desirable.

+ Over 10 years of investment-related experience, with some experience working directly for or with plan sponsor defined contribution plans.

+ Possess a working knowledge of the retirement industry with the ability to express strategic views on investment products and services including target maturity funds, target risk funds, managed accounts, plan sponsor advice, etc.

+ Comfortable working in a high performance and quantitative environment.

+ The ability to work independently with limited oversight and work well with clients.
+ Impeccable character with high ethical and quality standards.
+ Familiar with or a desire to learn Morningstar software packages.
