Schwab Retirement Technologies to Provide Direct Web Link to Morningstar ClearFuture

CHICAGO, Jan 17, 2002 – Morningstar, Inc., a global investment research firm, recently announced that Schwab Retirement Technologies™ (Schwab RT), a wholly owned subsidiary of The Charles Schwab Corporation, is providing its recordkeeping clients with a direct Web link to Morningstar® ClearFutureSM, an online investment education, research and advice service.

Through an interface between Schwab RT Recordkeeping, a Windows®-based recordkeeping software system, and Morningstar® ClearFutureSM, recordkeepers will be able to offer an investment guidance and advice tool to their plan sponsor clients. Linking from Schwab RT Web, an Internet product, plan participants will have access to specific investment recommendations on their core retirement plan assets. Schwab RT has established data feeds to enable transfer of plan details and participant information from its recordkeeping system to Morningstar® ClearFutureSM.

Morningstar® ClearFutureSM, which offers sophisticated research, education, investment guidance and advice to all levels of retirement plan participants, is fully integrated with Morningstar's proprietary stock and mutual fund databases. This integration allows Morningstar® ClearFutureSM to provide asset-allocation suggestions and specific investment advice that takes into consideration all of an individual's retirement assets. The service also creates diversified, optimal portfolios using the investment options available in the participant's company-sponsored retirement plans.

"Subscribers to Morningstar® ClearFutureSM through Schwab RT Web will receive the guidance and advice that many investors need today to make educated investment decisions," said John Rekenthaler, president of online advice for Morningstar. "The interface established between the two companies will give participants a more efficient view of their retirement assets, coupled with specific investment advice to meet individual goals."

"For Schwab RT clients looking to deliver investment advice to their plan sponsors and participants, our alliance with Morningstar allows us to deliver third-party recommendations in an effective, user-friendly way," said Patricia "Trish" Cox, President and Channel Manager of Schwab Retirement Technologies.

Available in February 2002, current and future Schwab RT clients will have the option to contract with Morningstar® ClearFutureSM at a reduced setup rate to provide plan participants investment guidance and advice.

Founded in 1983, Schwab Retirement Technologies is headquartered in Charlotte, North Carolina, and has been a wholly owned subsidiary of The Charles Schwab Corporation since 1995. Schwab Retirement Technologies (www.schwabrt.com) provides retirement plan recordkeeping and participant servicing solutions to consulting firms, third-party administrators, bank and trust companies, mutual fund companies and insurance companies.
