Morningstar DataLab Now Offers Morningstar Style Profile Module

CHICAGO, Jul 29, 2002 – Morningstar, Inc., a global investment research firm, has launched a new Style ProfileSM Module on Morningstar® DataLabSM, the firm's Internet-based investment research platform for asset managers, consultants, and other investment professionals. The Style ProfileSM Module is based on Morningstar's new Style BoxSM and Sector methodologies for U.S. equity open-end funds and provides the first analytical tools and graphical presentations based on the style attributes of the individual stock holdings.

Don Phillips, Morningstar managing director, said, "Our new Style Profile module represents a major advancement in the ability to monitor and manage style and category fund strategies. It will be invaluable to our clients in managing their funds as well as monitoring their peers."

Key Current Features

  • Style Radar SM A scatter plot that maps a selected universe or peer group of funds onto the Morningstar Style BoxSMand shows the exact style/market capitalization location of each fund, a selected index, as well as performance ranges for each fund. By using different colors to represent the relative performance of each fund, a "third dimension" is added and a vivid, visual display of market performance emerges.
  • Style Chart SM A scatter plot that maps a selected fund's U.S. equity holdings onto the Morningstar Style BoxSM, including a weighted average "Centroid" and "Ownership Zone" indicating 80 percent of the market capitalization concentration of the fund. Portfolio percentages of each holding along with sector coding are also presented in this unique and user-friendly graphical presentation.
  • Holdings Report SM – A detailed listing of the portfolio holdings as of the most recent portfolio received. Morningstar receives more than 75 percent of the portfolios in its database on a monthly or quarterly basis.

Future Enhancements

  • Style "What If?" SM – Evaluates effect of selling, buying, or changing the weight of a holding on a fund's style classification.
  • Holdings Viewer SM – Accesses and analyzes historical portfolios.
  • Style Consistency SM – Shows precise changes or style drift over time.

Morningstar® DataLabSM, launched in 2001, is the first Internet-based investment research interface that provides mutual fund companies and other institutions with unprecedented access to--and management of--thousands of discrete data points from Morningstar's historical database. Data sets are refreshed daily or monthly as appropriate. For more information about Morningstar® DataLabSM and the new Style Box module, visit http://datalab.morningstar.com.
