ING and Morningstar to Launch Investment Advice Initiative

CHICAGO, Nov 05, 2002 – ING, one of the world's largest financial organizations, and Morningstar Associates, LLC, a leading provider of investment advice, today announced a major initiative to deliver Morningstar's proprietary investment advice to ING's retirement plan clients and its financial advisers.

As part of the initiative, ING will offer Morningstar® ClearFuture®  Online advice, which is among the industry's leading retirement planning and advice services, to its 34,000 retirement plan sponsor clients and their 2.3 million defined contribution participants.  ING will also roll out Morningstar's new ClearFuture®  Statement advice, which gives participants a detailed printout of their current investments and suggestions to improve and diversify their portfolios.

In addition, Morningstar is creating a customized version of the Morningstar® Advisor WorkstationSM, a set of online investment planning and advice tools, which will be used by financial advisers within the newly formed ING Financial Horizons Advisory Program, a division of ING Financial Advisers, LLC, a registered investment adviser. The Morningstar Advisor Workstation will be fully integrated with PIE Technologies' MoneyGuidePro™ financial planning application, currently used by ING Financial Horizons' advisers. The combination of Workstation and MoneyGuidePro will provide advisers with a unique solution that offers comprehensive financial planning and specific investment advice.

Shaun Mathews, ING's chief marketing officer and president of ING Financial Horizons, said, "Our clients and financial advisers depend on us for technologically advanced tools to help them evaluate investment alternatives. The Morningstar name is trusted by investors and advisers alike and represents some of the best objective investment research in the industry. Morningstar was able to deliver a sophisticated, yet easy-to-use solution across a number of different channels."

"This is a landmark agreement for the investment advice business, and we believe it represents the first time a financial services firm has established an advice relationship that reaches both the defined contribution and retail investor through print and online media," said John Rekenthaler, president of Morningstar Associates, LLC.  "We're delighted that ING has selected our total advice solution for its diverse audience needs."

ING has selected the following advice tools from Morningstar:

  • Morningstar® ClearFuture® Online includes investment education, research, and advice for all levels of investors. ClearFuture gathers detailed financial information from participants to provide investment suggestions for their retirement accounts. Basing its analysis on both retirement and nonretirement assets, ClearFuture offers participants such tools as personalized goal planning, retirement income analysis based on enhanced simulations, and an innovative "bear market simulator" that tests risk tolerance.
  • Morningstar® ClearFuture® Statement takes the power of ClearFuture's online service and pushes it to all plan participants in an easy-to-read print statement. Morningstar ClearFuture gathers information about the participant and, if applicable, presents an analysis on the weaknesses in his or her current portfolio. Morningstar ClearFuture Statement advice offers asset allocation, mutual fund, and contribution recommendations, and shows how ClearFuture's recommendations can improve his or her chances of meeting retirement goals.
  • Morningstar® Advisor WorkstationSM is a customizable set of online investment planning and advice tools that includes data on more than 7,300 stocks, 14,000 mutual funds, and 20,000 variable annuity/life subaccounts.  ING Financial Horizons' advisers will use the Workstation's screening, selection and portfolio analysis tools to help build, analyze and monitor their clients' portfolios.
