Morningstar Expands Relationship with America Online

CHICAGO, Dec 05, 2002 – Morningstar, Inc., an independent investment research firm, today announced it has expanded its relationship with America Online, Inc., the world's leading interactive services company. Under the expanded agreement, Morningstar will provide proprietary investment tools, including its ClearFuture retirement planning service, to tens of millions of AOL members. This marks the first mass-retail offering of ClearFuture through a non-financial-services company.

Since 1994, Morningstar has provided AOL with comprehensive investment information, available through AOL's Personal Finance Channel. As part of its expanded agreement, AOL members will now have access to the following Morningstar services:

  • Morningstar® ClearFuture®, a leading online retirement planning service. It offers sophisticated investment research, education, guidance and advice to all levels of investors, and is accessible through AOL Keyword: ClearFuture. AOL members are able to get a free projection of their retirement income, including recommended asset allocation, based on their current financial situation. Members may alter up to 12 variables, including savings rate, asset allocation, and retirement age, to see the effect on their projected retirement income.
  • Morningstar Fund Selector, which screens and ranks thousands of mutual funds, based on customizable criteria such as expense ratios or returns.
  • Morningstar Investment Profiles detailing nearly 13,000 mutual funds derived from one of the largest databases in the industry. Investment Profiles highlight information on returns, investment style, management and other key performance indicators.
  • Morningstar's Top 25 Funds Lists, ranking funds within specific categories based on performance. Lists that rank funds solely based on one-, three-, five-, and 10-year returns, regardless of category, are also available.
  • In-depth feature articles on timely investment topics, written by Morningstar analysts.

"For years, Morningstar has had a very successful relationship with America Online, and we're delighted to offer an increasingly wide array of investment research services to millions of AOL members," said John Rekenthaler, president of Morningstar Associates. "Like AOL, Morningstar has long recognized the importance of strong design and simplicity in conveying complicated information to communicate with the broadest possible audience."

Marc Frons, vice president and general manager for AOL's Personal Finance Channel, said, "We're very pleased to expand our relationship with Morningstar and offer Morningstar ClearFuture to our member community. Our constant goal is to provide AOL members with the best online services available. Morningstar ClearFuture provides sophisticated investment tools and features, yet it's also a service that even novice investors will be comfortable using."
