CHICAGO, Jan 07, 2003 – The Hartford Financial Services Group, Inc. (NYSE: HIG) is enhancing the robust education platform it provides to its retirement program participants by providing access to Morningstar® ClearFuture®, a leading online retirement planning and guidance service, to more than 300,000 public sector retirement plan participants.

Morningstar® ClearFuture® will be made available to plan participants in The Hartford's governmental retirement programs, for which it provides administrative services through its subsidiary, Hartford Life Insurance Co. ClearFuture is available through Morningstar Associates, LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Morningstar, Inc.

A leading provider of 457, 401(a), and 403(b) plans, The Hartford recognizes the growing role of technology in providing fast and convenient access to tools that help educate and empower retirement plan participants to make informed investment decisions. ClearFuture® offers retirement plan participants access to supplemental, objective investment-planning guidance. ClearFuture's retirement planning and guidance services will be made available throughout 2003 and beyond to plan participants in The Hartford's governmental retirement programs. Access to ClearFuture will be available through The Hartford's award-winning group retirement plan Web site, HartfordOnline®.

"Now more than ever, there is a need for independent, objective guidance and advice services for individual investors who are depending on their employer's defined contribution plans to fund their retirements," said Eric Wietsma, vice president, Hartford Life, and director of Institutional Governmental Markets.

"The Hartford's participant education platform in the government sector is quite comprehensive. Morningstar® ClearFuture® complements the top-quality service and retirement planning expertise that The Hartford offers," said Wietsma. "Morningstar is well-known and well-respected within the financial services industry. The addition of ClearFuture allows The Hartford to service plan sponsors and their participants even more completely."

Known for its "high touch" service model, The Hartford gives participants in its governmental retirement programs access to local representatives who provide retirement planning assistance on a group and an individual basis. Plan participants can stay connected to their retirement accounts through Internet account access, a toll-free account access line, and a comprehensive quarterly statement.

"We've always made personal attention and education available to our participants," noted Wietsma. "Today's investors require convenience and choice. The addition of ClearFuture® allows participants to get the information they want – when they want it – while retaining the accessibility of our local representatives. It truly is a great fit with our retirement programs overall."

John Rekenthaler, president of Morningstar Associates, LLC, said, "We believe our planning tools and the depth and breadth of our underlying investment research differentiates ClearFuture® from other services in the market, and we are pleased that The Hartford has chosen Morningstar as its retirement planning provider. We look forward to serving the participants of The Hartford's governmental retirement programs and to working closely with The Hartford to help thousands of people take control of their portfolios by making informed investment decisions."
