Morningstar's Proprietary Separate Account Information Now Available in DataLab and Advisor Workstation

CHICAGO, Apr 29, 2003 – Morningstar today announced that its proprietary separate account holdings information is now available through Morningstar® DataLab®, a Web-based investment-research platform for institutions, and Morningstar® Advisor WorkstationSM, the firm's Web-based investment-planning system for financial advisors.

"Morningstar is the only place investment professionals can turn to for complete representative portfolio holdings for separate account products," said Joe Mansueto, chairman and CEO of Morningstar. "Investors today hold not just mutual funds, but also separate accounts, exchange-traded funds, individual stocks, and variable annuities. Now, investment professionals can make meaningful comparisons between investments or analyze a portfolio of multiple investment vehicles."

Morningstar's database includes information on more than 2,600 separate accounts with statistics such as trailing total returns, calendar returns, complete portfolio holdings, composition, sector weightings, Morningstar Style BoxSM, Morningstar Ownership ZoneSM, and number of accounts, as well as information about the manager's investment philosophies. The separate account information also includes details on how money managers can provide customized options for investors through security restrictions, tax efficiency measures, and sector weighting adjustments.

The company first began offering its separate account data in June 2002 through Morningstar® Principia®, the industry's leading investment management software.

Now, Morningstar is offering separate account information to asset managers and investment consultants through Morningstar® DataLab®, an online research platform that provides unprecedented access to -- and management of -- thousands of discrete data points from Morningstar's databases. DataLab displays mutual funds and separate accounts next to each other, allowing for straightforward, apples-to-apples comparisons. Research professionals can conduct advanced peer group and style analysis for mutual funds and separate accounts, and asset managers can use DataLab to research, create, monitor, and market Multi-Style Accounts (MSAs). DataLab offers tools that clearly illustrate how a separate account changes when an investment professional restricts certain securities, adjusts the sector weightings, or improves its tax efficiency.

DataLab includes a Holdings Metrics module that allows investment consultants and asset managers to examine a separate account's investment strategy at a level unavailable from any other source. The module's "Style What-If" functionality helps institutions analyze how the addition or subtraction of a specific stock affects the overall positioning and style of a portfolio. Morningstar's exclusive Style ChartSM plots each security within a separate account's portfolio and helps DataLab users understand subtle nuances of investment style. The Holdings Metrics module also includes the new Morningstar Ownership Zone, a graphical tool that gives investors a more complete picture of a mutual fund's holdings. The Ownership Zone is represented by a shaded area on the Morningstar Style BoxSM where most of the holdings fall, providing an intuitive representation of the area of the market in which the separate account invests. Data sets are updated daily. More information about Morningstar DataLab is available at http://datalab.morningstar.com.

Financial advisors can now access Morningstar's separate account data through a new module within Morningstar Advisor Workstation, a leading investment-planning system that offers four integrated modules: Planning, Clients & Portfolios, Research, and Sales. Advisors can conduct in-depth research by screening, ranking, and sorting separate account data that is updated daily.

Advisor Workstation's Sales module creates customized Morningstar Hypothetical Reports for any combination of separate accounts, mutual funds, stocks, exchange-traded funds, closed-end funds, and variable-annuity/life subaccounts. These illustrations can highlight a security's historical performance in isolation, in comparison with competing securities, or in the context of its contribution to the overall performance of a portfolio. The Clients & Portfolios module uses Morningstar's Portfolio X-Ray® feature to show how a client's separate account holdings complement or intersect with other securities at the underlying holding level. More information about Morningstar Advisor Workstation is available at www.MorningstarAdvisor.com.
