Top Fund Managers and Financial Experts to Discuss State of the Industry at Annual Morningstar Investment Conference, June 25 & 27 in Chicago
 CHICAGO, Apr 24, 2003 – After enduring the worst bear market since the 1970s, hundreds of financial advisors will gather at the Morningstar Investment Conference in Chicago to meet leading mutual fund managers and other investment experts.  This year's conference, to be held Wednesday, June 25, through Friday, June 27, at the Hyatt Regency Chicago on the Riverwalk, features keynote presentations from William H. Miller, CEO of Legg Mason Funds Management, and G. Randy Hecht, chairman and CEO of RS Investments.

The annual Morningstar Investment Conference, now in its 15th year, begins with The Morningstar Insight Forum, a series of pre-conference practice management sessions beginning at 10 a.m., Wednesday, June 25.  The all-day forum includes the following sessions: 

  • The Next Steps in Holdings-Based Analysis 
    with Don Phillips, Morningstar managing director   
  • Morningstar's Approach to Independent Stock Research 
    with Paul Kaplan, Morningstar director of research  
  • Using Stocks and Fixed-Income Funds in Portfolios 
    with Todd Trubey, Morningstar senior training consultant  
  • Effectively Presenting Portfolio Data to Clients 
    with Jon Horvath, Morningstar senior training consultant 

The conference officially kicks off at 6 p.m., Wednesday, June 25, with three panels on "Morningstar Night."  The first panel, Fund Research Roundtable, features Morningstar experts Russel Kinnel, director of mutual fund analysis, Kunal Kapoor, associate director of mutual fund analysis, and senior analyst Emily Hall.  During the second half of the program, attendees may choose between two sessions: Morningstar® Managed PortfoliosSM or Stock Analysts' Roundtable.  In the former, Art Lutschaunig, president and chief investment officer of Morningstar Investment Services, will share insights on building and managing portfolios designed to achieve targeted results within certain risk parameters. Pat Dorsey, director of stock analysis, will lead the second panel discussion about the current investing environment and how it has changed in the past year.  

The conference continues on Thursday, June 26. Financial advisors will hear insights from some of the industry's most respected portfolio managers, including:

  • John Calamos, chairman, CEO, and CIO, Calamos Investments 
    After the Fall: Growth Investing; Seasoned growth managers discuss how they've handled the post-bubble market and where they're spotting the best opportunities.  
  • Jean-Marie Eveillard, co-president and portfolio manager, First Eagle Funds and Ralph Wanger, CIO, Liberty Wanger Asset Management 
    Fund Manager Lifetime Achievement Awards; Morningstar salutes two of the fund industry's most successful managers.   
  • Mario Gabelli, chairman, CEO, and CIO, Gabelli Asset Management 
    Cash Cows: Beyond Earnings; A panel of fund managers discuss the process of looking beyond earnings for companies that produce cash.  
  • C. Kim Goodwin, managing director and CIO-Equities, State Street Research and Ted Truscott, CIO, American Express Financial Advisors
    Sailing Through the Storm; Fund managers discuss how their firms have handled the bear market.  
  • Marty Whitman, chairman and co-CIO, Third Avenue Management
    Finding the Market's Best Bargains; Successful value managers share their thoughts on where to find the best-priced stocks.

The cost to attend the conference is $595 and includes Morningstar Night and all conference sessions, keynote addresses, meals, and two receptions.  The Morningstar Insight Forum, a full-day seminar on Wednesday, June 25, costs $345.
