Morningstar Names John Rekenthaler Vice President of New Product Development, Patrick Reinkemeyer President of Morningstar Associates, LLC

CHICAGO, Oct. 26, 2004 – Morningstar, Inc. today announced that John Rekenthaler has been named vice president of new product development for Morningstar’s global operations, and Patrick Reinkemeyer has been named president of Morningstar Associates, LLC, a registered investment advisor and wholly owned subsidiary of Morningstar.

Rekenthaler previously served as president of Morningstar Associates and head of the company’s retirement advice business. Reinkemeyer previously served as president of Morningstar’s institutional investment consulting business. Under the new structure, Reinkemeyer will be responsible for the combined businesses, which will deliver investment advisory solutions to retirement plan providers, plan sponsors, and other institutions. Services include mutual fund line-up design, asset allocation, portfolio construction, investment monitoring, and retirement management, including professionally managed accounts. Rekenthaler will report to Joe Mansueto, chairman and chief executive officer. Reinkemeyer will continue to report to Tao Huang, chief operating officer.

Mansueto said, “I’m pleased to announce these new management responsibilities for John and Patrick. John has done an excellent job with our retirement advice business, building it over the last four years from a start-up operation to one of the largest independent advice and guidance providers in the retirement industry, reaching more than 10 million participants and 63,000 plan sponsors. In this new role, John will bring his product and business development skills to other aspects of Morningstar’s operations by leading product development throughout our global organization. Innovation has been a key part of Morningstar’s history, and John will help make it a key part of our future.”

He added, “In addition, we’re integrating our investment consulting and retirement planning businesses as part of our overall effort to expand the breadth of services we provide, especially to retirement plan providers, plan sponsors, and investors. There are many synergies between these two areas of our business, and bringing our resources together will further strengthen our capabilities. Patrick has significant investment expertise, creativity, and vision. Under his leadership, we will continue to focus on delivering sound investment solutions that help investors reach their goals.”

Rekenthaler joined Morningstar in 1988 and has served in several capacities. Before being named head of the retirement advice business in 2000, he was the firm’s director of research, where he helped to develop Morningstar’s proprietary methodologies, such as the Morningstar RatingÔ for funds and the Morningstar Style BoxÔ. Reinkemeyer joined Morningstar in 1996. Before being named head of investment consulting in 2000, he directed Morningstar’s investment information products for variable annuities.
